About CEDAR

The Centre for Next Generation EDA Research in Hong Kong

The Centre for Next Generation EDA Research (CEDAR) is a research centre dedicated to advancing Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and next-generation semiconductor technologies. Led by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), CEDAR brings together leading researchers from Hong Kong universities and industry partners to drive innovation in chip design and automation.

As integrated circuits become increasingly complex, CEDAR develops new approaches that combine artificial intelligence, advanced algorithms, and high-performance computing to make chip design faster, smarter, and more efficient. Its research addresses emerging trends such as AI chips, chiplets, advanced packaging, and heterogeneous computing systems.

A key focus of CEDAR is the development of Large Circuit Models (LCMs), AI foundation models that can understand and optimize circuits across different stages of the design process. These technologies enable a new generation of AI-native EDA tools that go beyond conventional design automation methods.

CEDAR’s research is organized around four strategic areas: Large Circuit Models, AI-native EDA, GPU/CPU-Accelerated EDA, and Heterogeneous Processor Design. Together, these efforts aim to deliver more powerful design tools and accelerate innovation in semiconductor systems.

Through research excellence, industry collaboration, and talent development, CEDAR seeks to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a global centre for EDA research and integrated circuit innovation.

Beyond Research, Real-World Impact

CEDAR aims to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a global hub for Electronic Design Automation (EDA) by attracting top researchers, students, and industry talent. Building on Hong Kong’s strong academic foundation, including The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s world-leading EDA research, the centre will support advanced EDA education, nurture future technology leaders, and create opportunities for close collaboration between academia and industry across the Greater Bay Area.

Through the development of next-generation EDA technologies, CEDAR will help foster startup growth, establish a vibrant academic-industry consortium, and accelerate technology transfer into real-world applications.

Supported by leading international universities and major semiconductor companies, the centre will also serve as a platform for global collaboration, research exchange, industry partnerships, and innovation in semiconductor design.
